Hi there,

For Debian GNU/Linux there's a free and open-source text-to-speech system
called festival:
http://packages.debian.org/etch/festival

Also, I sometimes use Mac OS X, and there's a very good text-to-speech
system built into the OS. You can choose from a dozen of voices. It is also
very easy to use, you can for instance just type "say Job completed" in a
shell/Perl/Python script and it's done.
