Ok maybe its a little out of context, but I think it might be worth looking into some. Whatever was used on the original furbys... not the pitiful things they replaced them with, made them able to learn from each other in conversations. Would love to see someone who knew how they accomplished that do something similar in this context... just my two bits.

They canâÂÂt actually see the results of the conversations though because both my bot and some of the others donâÂÂt allow multi user convos. I however can view the logs and itâÂÂs interesting at times, although some bots that are very linear in their convos get confusedâ¦which then throws mine off so the whole thing becomes nonsense. If anyone is interested in seeing them, IâÂÂll post the best ones.

I have thought that two chatbots together would be an interesting variation on the Turing test. Well, it's a start of a character concept, and shouldn't be too hard to implement, as long as you put the time in.

A question i just thought of too, is it possible to link two chabot together so they would chat with eachother on occasions? i just thought that might be interesting to watch them interact. MSN

Building a good bot can be a very time consuming project. Good bots as ranked in popularity polls generally have over 10,000 entries in their data bases.
Companies that provide complete solutions, including avatar integration are listed below, this is not a complete list; but shows some of the more established companies in this field.
Sitepal.com -- Uses flash technology. Vhost.com Oddcast.com -- both proprietary.
Verbots.com -- Good tech support and user forum, low entry level price, but AI database not AIML compatible, but converter code is available.
Haptek.com -- Their focus is more on the animation side; they provide very good avatars and very easy to use animation software. An API has been developed to interface Alice bots and AIML.
You will find that the 'meat and potatoes' of your bot must be its knowledge base. Unless your bot can give good responses the entire exercise is pointless.
So you must carefully plan the world or 'domain' your bot will converse about. You must limit the number of possible subjects the bot can talk about or the size of the needed knowledge base will become gigantic. This affects the characters your bot can portray or 'act out'. For example you could have a James Bond 007 character, or you could have a Daffy Duck character. A bot KB that simulates the responses of agent 007 would have to be vastly larger than the knowledge base that would be needed for Daffy Duck. Do you have a target audience in mind? What is the purpose for your bot? Have you defined your goals? Good luck Thomas.
Does anyone else have a recommendation for a product or Freeware Kit good for a student entry level project??

Great!! I'd love to hear about your experience. What methods & products did you use and why? What goals did you have, what is the purpose of your bot; or who is your target audience? Are you a hobbyist or a R&D commercial developer? In which case I will understand a reluctance to share proprietary info.

No one yet has integrated Speech to Text ÃÂ Chatbot API ÃÂ text to speech that I know of. Many bots have code for output to speech using different products. Off the top of my head I think there are about 6 different products to choose from that have teck support and many more that are 'home brew'. On the input side Dragon Naturally Speaking (current version) will give you excellent results, though the developer kit is expensive. To run well you will want a main board 2ghz or above with at least 512mb of ram. Window 2000 pro will do better for you than xp or Vista; less overhead. I don't know if Dragon is available in a Linux version; but most of the text to speech APIs are windows based. Check with Dragon tech (Nuance) for the best sound board to use, it can make a big difference. And of course, do not use a cheap microphone. With good hardware the accuracy of Dragon approaches 99% with training, but training is not now essential as accuracy is still
above 85% with no training.

Hello i am building a new Android and plan on installing a small motherboard into the chest cavity and possibly running two programs like speech to text then bouncing that text back to speech mimicing the original text answer, so the second text to speech would reply to the original question. I figure this is one way of running a speech to speech program/s. I have also recently hear of something through APL algorythm?. I am very new to this. If anyone has any input or feedback on the whole speech to speech recognition thing, please contact me.samtheswanster at yahoo.com

A bit more info would help. What web environment did you program for, using what programming tools? E.g. Adobe dreamweaver and flash? Do you plan to work inside an environment such as Second Life, or perhaps World of Warcraft? Did you use a special purpose tool such as HaptecÃÂâÃÂâ¬ÃÂâ¢s products? If you used a pro animation tool, what was it? Or do you actually mean a hardware robot? There is a lot of experimentation going on right now with Avatar interfaces, so some one should be able to give you specific advice.
