[pandorabots-general] custom made "body" for the chatbot

AIMLpad in conjunction with Dragon Naturally Speaking can perform the tasks you are requesting. It will auto-complete the input after a given time – typically a couple of seconds. Then process the input through the AIML (with some experimental extensions) and answer using the speech-to-text of MS Agent (this can be set to third party software to produce some natural sounding speech synthesis.) Because it hosts the output in MS Agent, some primitive facial expressions can also be displayed in your robot.

Now for the extensions AIMLpad offers. The scripting language which is activated by a <script> tag added to the AIML set in the <template>s can launch other programs, write other files, post http requests, etc. With its additional capability to receive inputs async through its simplified web server, AIMLpad can process inputs from the robot’s sensors and store representations of them in the AIML predicates for later inclusion in the conversation or for using in its simple expert shell production-rule processing with fuzzy logic capabilities. Granted it can’t do all the higher reasoning functions, but it may provide a place holder while a better alternative is developed.

The size of the processor board indicated below is sufficient, but you might want to increase the ram because the AIML sets are loaded into memory when the standard indexing for AIML is employed. Combine this with the other needs of coordinating a robot’s activities and the extra memory might be very handy. AIMLpad is written for MS Windows. It uses text files and XML files in a simple notepad like editor.

You can find AIMLpad at SourceForge or at http://www.AIMLpad.com <http://www.aimlpad.com/> where there are also tutorials. With only a few exceptions in tags (like the extensions to the date tag), AIML used at Pandorabot works with AIMLpad. AIMLpad has added some tags for expressing emotions and holding context or keeping a primitive agenda which won’t work at Pandorabot, but by avoiding the “extra” tags, AIML can be developed that works on both platforms quite well. Basically AIMLpad can be the desktop version of a Pandorabot website.

No one yet has integrated Speech to Text --> Chatbot API --> text to speech that I know of. Many bots have code for output to speech using different products. Off the top of my head I think there are about 6 different products to choose from that have teck support and many more that are ‘home brew’. On the input side Dragon Naturally Speaking (current version) will give you excellent results, though the developer kit is expensive. To run well you will want a main board 2ghz or above with at least 512mb of ram. Window 2000 pro will do better for you than xp or Vista; less overhead. I don’t know if Dragon is available in a Linux version; but most of the text to speech APIs are windows based. Check with Dragon tech (Nuance) for the best sound board to use, it can make a big difference. And of course, do not use a cheap microphone. With good hardware the accuracy of Dragon approaches 99% with training, but training is not now essential as accuracy is still above 85% with no training.

Hello i am building a new Android and plan on installing a small motherboard into the chest cavity and possibly running two programs like speech to text then bouncing that text back to speech mimicing the original text answer, so the second text to speech would reply to the original question. I figure this is one way of running a speech to speech program/s. I have also recently hear of something through APL algorythm?. I am very new to this. If anyone has any input or feedback on the whole speech to speech recognition thing, please contact me.samtheswanster at yahoo.com

A bit more info would help. What web environment did you program for, using what programming tools? E.g. Adobe dreamweaver and flash? Do you plan to work inside an environment such as Second Life, or perhaps World of Warcraft? Did you use a special purpose tool such as Haptec’s products? If you used a pro animation tool, what was it? Or do you actually mean a hardware robot? There is a lot of experimentation going on right now with Avatar interfaces, so some one should be able to give you specific advice.
