[pandorabots-general] future of bots is good!

Just got married, so I'm catching up on the Pandora news. To answer
your question Janpha, the short answer is you have not seen anything
yet. I believe the technology is poised for a major burst of
performance gains; and that in turn will allow a host of new
applications. The first place you will be able to make money is with
24/7 sales agents, help desk agents, and phone auto attendants. These
could be described as chatty 'expert systems'. Next is video game NPCs
(Non Player Characters) or you could call them 'actor bots'. Already
the new version of "Rainbow Six" the First Person Shooter, due out in
the fall I believe will allow for new squad tactics, where you are the
squad leader. Each agent AI will carry out your commands for the team's
actions. I don't know how chatty these NPCs are, but there is going to
be much more of use of AI for NPCs as graphics quality is no longer a
means by which you can distinguish your game. In games like 'Myst' the
NPCs will be able to tell much more complex stories / clues
interactively. This will be the new art form of "Interactive story
telling". Use of AI bots in forums like 'Second Life' is being
experimented with a lot right now. A few more years down the road
chatbot AI will be applied to toys, for example a talking teddy bear.
This can be accomplished at relativity low cost by exploiting WiFi and
the family PC. Inside the teddy bear is a Cell phone like transceiver,
in the family PC is the AI software / database for the bear's
'personality'. What chatbot AI is lacking most at this point is
emotional empathy and emotional simulation. However research is
actively being pursued and several possible programming models already
exist, none yet have been integrated into a chatbot AI that I know of.
At the Hi end of things, look to Japan to do it first; such as the
'Replyie' series of humanoid robots. The Japanese are keenly
interested in their bots having good social & communication skills and
are currently the most serious big bucks investors.
