There is commercial software in this field. I saw
it at a CAL conferance in Japan. I was surprised
to find that it seemed to work, but to the extent that
it seemed to recognise when students were giving
completely the wrong answer to preset questions
and answers. A closed response system by the def here

A few years ago I bought some voice recognition
software and found that my Japanese was not
recognised :-(. This encouraged me to believe that
VRS needs a lot of calibration or a good pronunciation.
But that was a few years ago.
I used my pandorabot for ESL but only using typing.

Subject: [pandorabots-general] Voice recognition
Hi
Has anyone done anything with voice recognition software? I teach ESL and
I want animated characters to respond to kids English. Pipe dream I guess!?
Regards
Neil
