Anne's message was the clearest thing that I have ever read about AIML.
Thanks a lot for posting it!

In the example where you give three possible responses to 
<pattern>WHAT DOES * MEAN</pattern>  

you list the question patterns in order: AARDVARK, TERRORIST, *

So I guess the system just goes down the list till it finds a match, and the
last one being a wildcard is the "default" match in case no prior match was
found?

That makes it sound really possible to start having fun immediately.  I am
going to download "Program E" today.  Thanks again.
